Your guide will meet you outside Newtown Train station to begin your tour of this eclectic area. Learn about the history and origins of this fascinating part of inner-western Sydney. You will hear about its humble beginnings and how it transformed into the lively and exuberant suburb it is today.

Your walk takes you away from the main street and into the wonderful greenspace of Camperdown Memorial Rest Park. As the name suggests, there is plenty of resting going on here as the whole community comes to enjoy the tranquil outdoor space. Switch into people-watching mode as you take in the abundance of dog walking, baby goo gooing, hipster, goth, punk, student, roller derby girrlll watching, guitar playing and general bonhomie as the locals get down to the serious business of just relaxing and soaking up the vibe.

Tucked inside a walled section of this park are the 4 acres of Camperdown Cemetery. One of the earliest cemeteries in Sydney, your guide will bring to life the people and their stories of how they also came to rest here.  Beautiful sandstone memorials inject a sense of serenity amid the tousled gardens. Learn about the many notable early Australians buried here and find out about the strange link to Charles Dickens. Hear about shipwrecks, paupers, murders, love and betrayal!  Keep an eye out for the wandering ghost…
